Allotment gardeners work vegetable beds and cater to flower beds manually. This work is hard, but it can be made easier.
To cope with the erosion of the soil and with annoying weeds, the removal of which takes a lot of time and effort, you can apply a special technology for making raised vegetable and flower beds. In raised beds, the roots of plants will warm up better, which will have a good effect on their yield; you will get rid of ground pests (moles and blind mole rats), and you will no longer have to bend over and curve your back when caring for plants.
You can make such beds yourself from improvised materials, using planks, timber, wicker boards made of branches, metal, brick, stone, concrete, plastic and polymer materials. It should be mentioned here that it is better to give preference to materials that are resistant to corrosion, softening, destruction and rotting. Polymer materials are suitable in terms of parameters. They are affordable and wear-resistant. But, as a rule, people use what is left after the construction or renovation of their houses.
The undeniable advantage of mound beds is that it is possible to make a vegetable garden with them even where it would be impossible. You can make a bed even on asphalt – the main thing is to choose a place that is good for growing plants. There should be no drafts, and the place should be warm and sufficiently illuminated.
The height of a bed depends on your possibilities and requests. Usually it is 30 cm and higher, but this does not prevent you from doing it at the waist level to provide convenient access to plantings. The optimal width is 100-120 cm. So you can easily reach all the plants and fruits. As for the length, you can choose any at your discretion.
If the material of the sides (frame) of raised beds requires this, pre-treat it with anticorrosive, waterproofing formulations or mold repellents.
After installing and fixing the frame, you should prepare not only the soil that will fill the bed, but also put a layer of the black Agrotex 60 or Agrotex 80 unwoven material at the bottom, which will be a barrier against rodents and other pests. You should use only sifted soil that is cleared of weeds. This way you will ensure the purity of the soil in your bed. If desired, you can make a layered structure, providing drainage of the root system.
Be sure to add all the necessary fertilizers, and then put on top of the bed one more layer of the black mulching material, which will hold back the growth of weeds and free you from the laborious work of weeding for the whole season.
Let growing vegetables give you pleasure! We wish you high yields on high beds!
